How Often Should You Get Your Dog Groomed?

    Last updated 16 days ago

The frequency of grooming that your dog requires depends on a number of factors, including length and texture of fur, activity level, and normal surroundings. Bringing your dog to a grooming facility within a veterinary clinic will ensure that your dog receives safe care from a knowledgeable groomer. Take a look at the following information to learn how often your dog requires different grooming services.

    • Brushing: All dogs should be brushed on a regular basis to help promote healthy skin, remove shed hair, and get rid of tangles. Short-haired dogs may only need to be brushed once every week, while long-haired dogs should be brushed several times a week. Dogs who have coats that can easily become matted, such as poodles and Yorkshire terriers, should be brushed every day.
    • Bathing: Bathing is an important component of dog care, but it is possible to bathe your dog too often. Dogs should not be bathed more than once a week, as bathing can remove natural oils from the skin and coat and cause dry skin. Most dogs can remain clean and comfortable with baths every four to eight weeks, depending on how often a dog is outside and what activities he or she participates in.
    • Trimming: You should have your long-haired dog’s fur trimmed by a professional groomer every four to eight weeks unless you can keep it completely tangle-free. During the summer months, many long-haired dogs find it more comfortable to have their hair cut short. Short-haired dogs may never have to be trimmed, though they may also enjoy having shorter fur during the summertime.
    • Nail Clipping: Clipping your dog’s nails at home can be difficult, as it is possible to cut too much and cause your dog to bleed. Very active dogs may only need to have their nails clipped every two to three months, while less active dogs may need to have their nails trimmed as frequently as every four weeks.

The groomers at Gully Animal Hospital have years of experience bathing and trimming dogs of all kinds. To learn more about our grooming services, call Gully Animal Hospital in Arlington today at (817) 756-6733.

Tips for Caring for Your Pet after Surgery

    Last updated 23 days ago

There are a number of surgeries that your pet may undergo during its lifetime, including spaying or neutering. When your pet comes home from the veterinary hospital after a surgical procedure, it’s important that you provide proper care to help your pet heal. Continue reading to learn some post-operative care tips that will help you keep your pet comfortable and healthy.

    • Make Your Pet Comfortable: Be sure to provide a clean bed with plenty of padding where your pet can relax during recuperation. Your pet should be able to easily lie down and get up from the bed. It’s important to keep any dressings clean and dry, so be sure to check for accidents regularly and take away any damp bedding right away.
    • Keep Your Pet Calm: It’s important to keep your pet from getting excited or jumping up and down after surgery, as it can easily damage any incisions, sutures, and dressings. Avoid rigorous play until your pet has healed. If your pet tends to get very excited after hearing certain sounds, such as the doorbell or a can opener, try to prevent these sounds from occurring in your home until your pet has recovered from surgery.
    • Follow Your Veterinarian’s Instructions: Your veterinarian will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions for your pet. Be sure to follow these instructions, as they are provided to help you keep your pet healthy. If your veterinarian has provided medication, make sure that you administer the appropriate dosage at the instructed times. Your veterinarian may schedule a check-up in the days or weeks following your pet’s surgery, and it’s essential that you attend this check-up to ensure that your pet is healthy and healing properly.

If your pet is in need of surgery, the veterinarians at Gully Animal Hospital can help. To learn more about caring for your pet after surgery, call Gully Animal Hospital in Arlington today at (817) 756-6733.
