Signs That Your Pet Has Sustained an Injury

    Last updated 16 days ago

If your pet has been injured, you will want to seek veterinary care at your area animal clinic. But sometimes an animal injury can be difficult to detect. Unlike their human counterparts, our dogs and cats can’t just tell us what is wrong with them. As a result, it is important for all pet owners to recognize some of these basic signs that your pet has been injured or is in medical distress.

    Respiratory Distress

If you suspect that your pet is having trouble breathing, start by watching their chest. The chest wall should be expanding and contracting slowly and steadily. If there is little or no expansion of the chest wall, your pet could be in respiratory distress. Other signs of respiratory problems include an extended neck or head and loud or unusual sounds when breathing.

    Traumatic Distress

If your dog or cat has had a mishap or been in an accident, they may show signs of trauma, including lacerations or obviously broken bones, an inability to stand by themselves or severe limping, or symptoms of pain including whining or guarding. Also, be aware of a sudden or unusual lack of coordination, as this too can be a sign of trauma or sudden injury.

    Gastrointestinal Distress

Your pet may be experiencing gastrointestinal distress if he or she is vomiting or has diarrhea. Pay particular attention to blood in the vomit or stool, as this can be a symptom of additional internal injuries. In less severe cases, your cat or dog might have a lack of appetite or general fatigue.

    Nervous System Distress

If your dog or cat is suffering from an injury to the nervous system, they may demonstrate neurological symptoms such as restlessness, tremors, or seizures. To check for neurological issues, begin by attempting to interact with your dog or cat. If your pet’s nervous system is impacted they will likely not be alert and may have trouble responding to voice and touch.

Caring for Your Dog When He Has an Ear Infection

    Last updated 28 days ago

While all dogs have some level of bacteria growing in their ears, if the natural balance of your pet’s ears becomes unsettled, an ear infection can occur. If you suspect that your dog may be suffering from an ear infection, contact your local animal clinic and read on for a better understanding of ear infection care.

    Symptoms

Pets with ear infections will often display a number of symptoms, including discharge from the ears and redness or swelling in the inner flap or canal of the ear. You may notice some behavioral changes in your dog as well, including seemingly excessive scratching, shaking, or tilting of the head. It is also likely that he or she will react negatively to having his or her ears touched when suffering from an ear infection.

    Treatment

If you suspect that your dog has an ear infection, make an appointment with your veterinarian. Depending on the severity of the infection, your animal care practitioner may prescribe a course of oral antibiotics, ear drops, or other alternative treatments. Because ear infections can be not only painful to your pet, but also permanently damaging to his or her hearing, it is important to seek care as soon as you notice symptoms.

    Prevention

Routine care of your dog’s ears can help to prevent ear infections before they take root. Clean your pet’s ears regularly, but avoid inserting anything directly into the ear canal. If your dog has hairs in his or her ear canal, ask your veterinarian about having them tweezed out to prevent matting in the ears. Also, recognize if your dog is at high risk for ear infections. For example, dogs that spend a great deal of time in moist climates or dogs with floppy ears are typically more prone to infections. If your dog is considered to be at high risk, ask your animal clinic to inspect your pet’s ears each time you visit.
