Is there a vacation that you’ve been dying to take, but don’t know what to do with your pet while you’re gone?
Your pets are like your children—so you don’t want to leave them with just anyone. Finding a good place to board your pet seems like a daunting task, but here are a few tips to help you out.
- Ask your veterinarian for recommendations of places in your area. People working at veterinary clinics and pet hospitals hear a lot from the pets’ owners when it comes to trustworthy kennels. Gully Animal Hospital is an animal clinic that also boards pets!
- Even with the blessing of your vet or local animal hospital, you should still research a kennel before deciding to board your animal there. Check the company out with the Better Business Bureau to make sure they have no serious customer complaints against them.
- Go down to the kennel and check it out for yourself. You can see if it’s clean and orderly and get a feel for the staff who works there. You’ll rest easier if you know you can feel comfortable with those caring for your pet.
- Definitely make sure that the kennel requires animals to have all of their shots. You don’t want your poor pet to get sick from another animal that hasn’t been properly immunized.
If all of this checks out, then you should be worry-free while your pets are at the kennel, leaving you free to enjoy that vacation you’ve been trying to go on for so long.
If you decide to travel with your pet, then Gully Animal Hospital has some travel tips on our website to keep you and your pet happy on the trip.

Want to be prepared in case your pet suffers a minor injury? Make yourself a pet first-aid kit to be prepared for any scenario.
Believe it or not, these are similar to first-aid kits for people. They should include: bandages, tape, antiseptics, tweezers, Neosporin, and children’s liquid Benedryl.
Be careful with doses when giving your pet medication. Do not give them Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or others aspirins, because those can be toxic to your animal.
Watch this video for more information about how to properly make a first-aid kit for your pet.
Call the vets at Gully Animal Hospital with any questions you have about your pet’s health.

Cats are notoriously independent animals, so it’s easy to forget that they need some help with hygiene every now and then.
But don’t worry—there is no need to take your cat to our veterinarian or local animal hospital for grooming. You can do it in the privacy of your own home.
- Cats, especially long-haired cats, sometimes need help with their coats. If not brushed on a regular basis, their fur will become disheveled and tangled. Brushing also allows you to see if there are any blemishes or imperfections on your cat’s skin. If you do find anything amiss when grooming, take your cat into the vet just to make sure everything is okay.
- While we all know that cats have claws—their claws can be more than just a nuisance to your furniture. Check your cat’s claws every now and then and make sure they look healthy. If you find a loose claw or otherwise damaged claw, then take your cat to your local veterinary clinic. A damaged claw can become infected if not treated promptly.
- If you are finding cat hair all over your house, don’t worry—you don’t need to rush down to the pet hospital. Cats are shedders, which is another reason to brush them as often as possible. Brushing them will reduce shedding, and will keep their coats shiny and sleek. Simple brushing will make your cat look so good that people will think you’ve had them professionally groomed.
